Trisha book

People expect a lot of happiness from life but shit happens and I’ve been through a fair amount of it … what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and, when I look back on my life, I wouldn’t change a thing. If I hadn’t worked the way I did, if I hadn’t gone through all those dreadful relationships, if I hadn’t hit rock bottom, I wouldn’t be the person I am today

Trisha Goddard is a survivor as this book demonstrates. Just after her 50th birthday, in March 2008, she discovered she had breast cancer, an account of which is included in this paperback edition of her autobiography. Yet even prior to that Trisha’s life has had more than its share of ups and downs. She discusses how she

  • was hit by her father
  • was sexually assaulted as a teenager
  • became a victim of domestic violence from one of her partners
  • how, after trying to commit suicide, she became addicted to pethidine
  • her battles with food and her weight
  • turned her back on drugs
  • has always struggled with obsessive behaviour
  • how her first husband (respected in the world of conservative Australian politics) lied that he had cancer when in fact he had AIDS
  • was welcomed and looked after by those on the edges of Sydney’s seedy night-life
  • coped with the infidelity of her second husband
  • spent five week in a psychiatric hospital

Yet Trisha’s view is that whatever life throws at you it doesn’t have to defeat you. She moved from Australia to the UK to present her eponymous show and has found happiness in her personal life with her third husband, Peter and her two daughters and through her campaigning work for a better understanding of mental issues.
