Coping With Loss

Coping with loss is one of the hardest things many of us will ever experience. We all have to face the problem in some form or other during our lives, and we all need support and understanding to help us throughout the grief.

How you respond to a death, or a bereaved person, is very individual and personal, but there are certain feelings that seem common to so many of us:

  • “I can’t believe it has really happened”
  • “I feel nothing, I’m in shock”
  • “Why did it have to happen?”
  • “I feel such pain”
  • “I go over it again and again”
  • “I feel so depressed, life has no meaning, I can’t go on”
  • “They said I’d be over it in a few months, but the pain goes on and on”

And those trying to comfort the bereaved can also feel at a loss – unsure what to do or say for the best. This sometimes leads them to avoid the person altogether as they feel embarrassed or worried that they will upset them if they talk about it.

There are also practical details to be taken care of, such as organising a funeral or memorial service and knowing how to find out what money can be claimed towards expenses.

If you need any help with any of the many aspects of coping with loss, there are organisations you can turn to that understand what you are going through.

Trisha's Tips

  • Be kind to yourself and take care of yourself when you’re grieving. It sounds basic, but it’s very important. Eat well, drink plenty of fluids and go for a brisk walk when you can. In grief people often neglect themselves, which can bring them even lower. Some people even make a little time table for themselves – it can help.
  • Don’t rule out getting a pet – a dog, cat, goldfish, or budgie - as it can help to keep yourself busy by looking after something else.
